

TORONTO, September 15, 2006 — Amongst a flurry of interest, Picturehouse has acquired all North American rights to El Cantante, directed by Leon Ichaso (Piñero), at the 2006 Toronto International Film Festival, it was announced today by Bob Berney, President of Picturehouse.
El Cantante is the dramatic-biography of Puerto Rican, salsa pioneer Hector Lavoe. The film follows Lavoe’s (Anthony) passionate relationship with Puchi (Lopez) and his skyrocket to international fame. But even when he has it all, Lavoe is unable to escape the allure of drugs and his personal pain.
“El Cantante is a vibrant and heart-wrenching film full of outstanding performances and glorious music,” said Berney. “Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony are amazing and share a chemistry rarely seen on film. We are proud to be working with Leon Ichaso and look forward to bringing this moving film to a wide audience.”
“It has been a thrill to come to Toronto and share El Cantante with such a receptive audience,” said Marc Anthony. Added Jennifer Lopez, “We look forward to a successful partnership with Picturehouse and are confident our film will be well taken care of.”
Produced by Julio Caro, Simon Fields, Jennifer Lopez and David Maldonado, El Cantante was written by Leon Ichaso and David Darmstaeder & Todd Anthony Bello. Picturehouse is aiming for a summer 2007 release.
The deal was brokered on behalf of Picturehouse by Senior Vice President of Acquisitions, Sara Rose and by Carolyn Blackwood, Executive Vice President of Business Affairs and Co-Productions, New Line and negotiated on behalf of the film by Graham Taylor of Endeavour and Cassian Elwes of the William Morris Agency. International sales for the film are being handled by Nicolas Chartier at Voltage Pictures.
Launched in April 2005, Picturehouse is the joint venture of two leaders of the entertainment community - HBO and New Line Cinema. Currently in release is Robert Altman’s A Prairie Home Companion based on Garrison Keillor's legendary radio variety show and starring Keillor (as himself), with Academy Award-winners Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, Tommy Lee Jones, Academy Award-nominees Lily Tomlin, John C. Reilly, Woody Harrelson, Virginia Madsen, “Saturday Night Live's” Maya Rudolph and Lindsay Lohan. Upcoming films include Steven Shainberg's Fur: An Imaginary Portrait of Diane Arbus, which stars Nicole Kidman and Robert Downey, Jr. and Guillermo del Toro’s gothic fairy tale Pan’s Labyrinth, which screened at this year’s Toronto Film Festival to great audience and critical acclaim.
